Little conversations

How to invite your partner into a little shared ritual

Try a smaller invitation: one question or one shared moment, with room for your partner to say what would actually feel good to them.

You find something you would like to try together: a conversation deck, a journal, or a couples app. You are excited. Your partner may just hear “another thing we have to do.”

An invitation can leave room for both reactions. You can say what appeals to you without deciding in advance that it has to become a habit.

Say what you would enjoy

Make the reason personal and specific. You do not need to frame it as fixing your relationship.

“I miss hearing the little things that happen during your day. Would you like to try one question together tonight?”

Or:

“I thought it could be fun to save a photo each from this week. Want to try it once?”

Those are examples to adapt, not scripts you need to get right.

Make the first try genuinely small

Choose one easy conversation question or one entry in a shared weekly journal. Give yourselves a clear stopping point. Trying it once does not have to imply a daily commitment.

If you are suggesting an app, show your partner the actual activity before asking them to create an account. Be clear about what needs both of you, what it costs, and whether notifications can be adjusted.

Ask what would make it easier

Maybe they like talking but dislike writing. Maybe evenings are a bad time. Maybe they would rather swap pictures than answer a thoughtful prompt.

You can ask:

  • Would a silly question be more fun than a serious one?
  • Would you rather do this together or leave something for each other to find?
  • Would you prefer a notebook, a message, or an app?

A different answer is useful information, not resistance to overcome.

Leave room for no

If your partner does not want to try it, accept that. A shared ritual needs to be something you both choose. You can find another way to spend time together, or simply leave the idea for now.

The best first step is one that both of you would like to take.
